For a better student representation, for a better GW.

What questions the “Student Union” proposal answers:

I.) How do we take the politics out of our student representation and make sure it is focused, efficient and driven to accomplish tangible goals on behalf of students?

The Union will have very few internal rules and protocol, giving it free rein to advocate 100% of the time, and giving it no excuses to waste time on petty politics. There is no president or vice president, so there is no political system or political offices in place for people to attach their egos and ambitions to. The heads of the Unions only have the additional responsibility of calling and presiding over the meetings of their Union. Elections will still take place, but unlike SA elections, Union elections will produce creative ideas and initiative proposals. The Union is all about knowledge and ideas, and using them to formulate results. The candidates with the best ideas and proposals will win. A candidate without good knowledge and good ideas probably won’t succeed as a member and won’t get elected in the first place. While the SA has always focused on politics, the structure of the Union makes it focused solely on substance.

II.) How will we allocate student fee money in a fairer and more efficient manner?

The current allocation process is criticized by nearly every student organization on campus. Why is the SA allocating money to begin with? The power of allocations would go back to University clubs and orgs. They understand their needs far more than the SA ever could. They would be given some liberty to make the allocation process easier and more efficient, and would be better at understanding the needs of their fellow student groups. Also, with the disbandment of the SA, a significant amount of money that would otherwise go to ineffective SA bureaucratic structures would be added to the allocation pool, so there would be more funding for every student org and club on campus!
